Your Creator Brief Is Killing the Content
A creator brief should create clarity, not control every creative decision. The difference can determine whether branded content feels natural or scripted.
The brief has one job
A creator brief exists to make sure everyone understands what the campaign needs to accomplish. It should clarify the objective, audience, key message, requirements, and boundaries.
Problems begin when the brief starts prescribing the entire piece of content. At that point, the creator is no longer being asked to contribute their creative perspective.
Too much control creates predictable content
When every sentence, shot, transition, and talking point is predetermined, creators have less room to use the formats and communication styles their audiences already recognize.
The result can be technically correct brand content that feels disconnected from the creator's usual work.
Define the non-negotiables
Brands still need control over important campaign requirements. Product claims, mandatory disclosures, brand guidelines, deliverables, deadlines, and prohibited claims should be clear before production begins.
These are constraints that protect the campaign. They are different from controlling every creative decision.
- Campaign objective
- Target audience
- Core message
- Mandatory product information
- Required disclosures
- Deliverables and deadlines
- Brand safety requirements
Leave room for the creator
The creator should have meaningful freedom over how the idea is communicated. Their understanding of their audience is part of the value they bring to the partnership.
Instead of writing the entire script, give the creator the problem, message, and boundaries. Then let them determine how that idea should live in their content.
A better test for your brief
Read the brief and ask one question: does this tell the creator what success looks like, or does it tell them exactly what to say?
If the second answer is true, look for places where requirements can be converted into outcomes. Give creators enough direction to stay aligned with the campaign while preserving enough freedom for the content to feel like them.
The practical takeaway
The best creator brief is not the longest one. It is the one that removes ambiguity without removing creativity.
Give creators a clear destination, establish the boundaries, and let their expertise determine the route.
