Why Sends Per Reach Matters More Than Likes

Likes are easy to notice. Shares tell you whether a piece of content was useful enough to pass along.

The metric changes the question

A like usually tells you that someone enjoyed, recognized, or agreed with a piece of content. A share asks a different question: was this worth passing to someone else?

That distinction matters for creator marketing because content does not have to stop with the person who sees it. The strongest pieces can travel through private conversations, group chats, stories, and direct messages.

Why shares can be strategically useful

When people share something, they are effectively attaching their own social context to it. They may be sending it to a friend who needs the recommendation, a colleague who would find it useful, or someone who would simply understand the joke.

For brands, that creates an opportunity to think beyond immediate engagement and focus on whether creator content gives people a reason to involve someone else.

  • Does the content solve a recognizable problem?
  • Does it make a useful recommendation?
  • Does it express something an audience wants to identify with?
  • Would someone naturally send it to another person?

What this means for creator briefs

Instead of briefing creators only around product features, give them a clear audience problem, a useful point of view, and enough creative freedom to communicate it naturally.

The objective is not to manufacture shares. It is to create content that has a legitimate reason to be shared.

The practical takeaway

Likes still have value, but they should not be the only signal used to understand content quality. For creator campaigns, look at the broader behavior around the content and ask whether people are doing something with it beyond simply tapping a button.
