Follower Count Is a Vanity Metric
Audience size provides context, but it should not become a substitute for understanding the audience itself.
A number cannot explain an audience
Two creators can have similar follower counts and completely different audiences. Their interests, geography, purchasing behavior, content preferences, and relationship with the creator may vary substantially.
That makes audience size useful as a starting point, but incomplete as a selection criterion.
Look at audience relevance
The first question should be whether the creator reaches the people the brand actually wants to reach.
A smaller but highly relevant audience can be more useful for a campaign than a much larger audience with limited connection to the product or category.
- Audience demographics and geography
- Content category and positioning
- Typical audience response
- Creator credibility within the niche
- Fit with the brand's intended customer
Look at the content too
The creator is not just a distribution channel. They can also be a source of creative ideas and usable content.
Review how naturally they explain products, tell stories, demonstrate things, and communicate with their audience. The quality of that creative fit can matter as much as the size of the audience.
Use follower count as context
Follower count is not useless. It helps establish the approximate scale of a creator's audience. The mistake is treating it as the conclusion rather than one input in a larger evaluation.
Creator selection becomes stronger when audience, content, credibility, and campaign objective are considered together.
